A Day in Sacramento, California with Femily
Photos by Femily & Christine Alward
Sacramento, California. It’s the capital of the fifth largest economy in the world, birthplace of LeVar Burton, and the backdrop of the movie about a mother and daughter’s complex relationship that was so powerful it catapulted a female director’s career into the stratosphere. It’s also the part-time home of Silicon Valley’s Gender Equity Advisor, Femily. Here’s how she spends a day in SacTown.
MORNING
Drawing/journaling + mushroom coffee in bed (childfree) + cat lounging, force myself to workout (jog or home bike or obé online strength class).
MID-MORNING
Co-working session in the self-development designer library at my new glam, women-centered co-working wellness social club for artists, entrepreneurs, femme bosses and those who love us: The Jacquelyn, midtown Sac.
LUNCH BREAK option 1
Shopping at Queer Shoppe, Oak Park. I love that Amelia at Queer Shoppe remembers my style and always recommends things when I visit, “Oooh do you need a retro swimsuit for the Russian River (queer) women’s weekend?”
LUNCH BREAK option 2:
A bookstore browse at Underground Books (Black woman-owned!). It’s my fave for placing orders when I hear about a book on NPR or from a pal and grabbing them once they’re in.
A POWER HOUR (OR TWO)
With my corporate clients: tech leaders who want their companies to be as welcoming and fair for women + BIPOC + LGBTQAIs+ as they are for everyone else.
MID-AFTERNOON
Plant care + porch reading. Or a nap.
EVENING
Cooking time or, a date with the honey at Saigon Alley, for the best vegan (Beyond) pho. Or with the pals at Bambi Vegan Tacos. Or at Lobrau, a gay-centered beer hall.
