And how you feel can seriously impact your happiness, job, and overall satisfaction with life. In today's world, emotions often get a bad rap, but it's really important to understand what they're all about.

As I've entered my 40s, I've become more comfortable expressing my true feelings. I don't feel as guilty about saying no, and I worry less about how others will react. I'm proud of this version of myself, but I also know there's a downside to getting too caught up in my emotions and letting how I feel take the reins.

And it's not just me. Many of the leaders I coach struggle with finding the right balance with their emotions. Whether they feel the need to hide or bury their feelings or, like me, they are a little too comfortable saying how they feel, the key to being our most authentic selves is finding balance with our emotions. It's this unbalanced approach to emotions in the workplace that led me to develop the PRISM approach for regulating, but not dismissing, our emotions.
