The Tunics of Our Dreams

Whether it’s hot temps or hot flashes, or both, stay cool out there

Even though we’re all dreaming of the cool return of fall, the reality is this: it’s still hot across the U.S. Really hot.

When you’re dealing with temps so high it makes even your eyelids sweat, you want an easy-breezy wardrobe. You know, something you don’t have to put too much thought into and yet can still look fabulous. Enter my favorite piece, the tunic.

The tunic has everything. It’s got pockets. It’s got room for every curve of my body. It’s got air circulating around my legs, which like to rub together. My thighs just want to cuddle with each other all the time, who can blame them? But most importantly, it’s got ease.

Here are the tunics of my dreams. Or at least, the ones who will help bridge the gap between now and when the thermometer finally drops.

Vintage Raw Silk Tunic Dress $250

Colorful, cute, and offering an opportunity for a sexy side-leg moment, this silk tunic by 4Kinship is everything I want. Plus, according to people who know way more things about fabric than me say that while cotton is cooler than silk, silk offers some fantastic benefits for both hot weather and hot flashes. It’s breathable which allows heat to escape, is moisture-wicking, and it feels nice on your skin. There’s even some evidence that silk can help your skin stay supple and hydrated.

Long Linen Tunic in Charcoal $150

If you’re looking for something more neutral—and machine washable—this long linen tunic in charcoal by Area Home is one I love. Made from 100% linen, the fabric of choice for our prehistoric ancestors who lived without A/C, this dress is ultrasoft and lightweight. It’s also made by people working in certified safe conditions and who receive fair wages.

Pim Romper $168

Okay, so this isn’t a tunic. But I’m not going to let that stop me from loving it. Look at that cute fabric belt keeping this romper tight. Plus, this lovely little piece is made out of a super-soft toweling-style cotton-blend fabric. Heaven.

Upcycled Vintage 80s Silk Jumpsuit $195

Fine. This one isn’t a tunic either, but it’s vintage 80s! It demanded to be included on the list. Again, we’re going with silk here to keep things cool. I’m loving the boxy cut and roomy feel. I also see this as a great transition piece moving from blazing heat to cooler weather. Throw a cardigan or wrap over it and you’ve got instant cozy.

So hopefully these finds will help you stay cool out there. Also, speaking of weather, congrats to all who tirelessly worked to pass the historic climate bill through the Inflation Reduction Act. Scientists say there’s still lots more to be done, but most agree this is a big step in the right direction to help mitigate the effects of climate change.
